Berhampur: A miscreant was killed and another injured in two separate encounters with police in Odisha’s Ganjam district Tuesday, police said. Babu Nayak (25), allegedly involved in over 40 cases including a major bank dacoity, was injured after exchange of fire with a police team near Kadua, said sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) of Bhanjanagara, Utkala Keshari Das.
Nayak, who received injury, was arrested and taken to hospital where doctors declared him dead, police said. Two country-made pistols, some live ammunition and a motorcycle were seized from the site of encounter and one of associates was also arrested, Das said.
Police said Nayak, who had been arrested on August 3 last year at Janibandh under Tarsingi police station limits, had escaped while undergoing treatment in MKCG Medical College and Hospital here on November 25, this year. In another incident, a miscreant named Ananta Kumar (23), allegedly involved in at least 10 cases in different districts, including Ganjam was arrested after an exchange of fires with police at Gudidhepa, police said.
The accused, who received bullet injuries in his right leg, was admitted at MKCG Medical College and Hospital here and his condition was stated to be stable, they said. Police seized a motorbike, a country-made pistol, three rounds of live ammunitions from him, said sub divisional police officer (SDPO) Chhatrapur Ramesh Chandra Sethi. One of his accomplices, however, managed to escape from the spot, he said.
