Mumbai : The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of West Bengal in a joint operation with the Mumbai Crime Branch arrested from the city one of the persons involved in the gang rape of a 71-year-old nun on March 14 in a convent in Ranaghat city of Nadia district.
The information regard-ing the presence of the accused had been relayed to the Mumbai police by the West Bengal CID late on Wednesday night. A team comprising officers of the Unit I of the Crime Branch was set up to hunt down the alleged accused, identified as Mohammed Salim Shaikh, a Bangladeshi citizen.
Shaikh was finally traced to a slum in Reay Road where he had been living alone for the past three to four days. A raid was conducted by the police and he was apprehended near JJ Hospital in Byculla and placed under arrest at 3.05 am on Thursday. He was later handed over to the West Bengal police.
A second accused in the case, Gopal Sarkar, who is also a Bangladeshi national and had illegally entered West Bengal, too has been picked up. He was also part of the gang that was headed by Shaikh.
The two arrests have come 11 days after the sensational case, wherein the nun was raped inside the Convent of Jesus and Mary in Ranaghat, around 80 km from Kolkata. The CCTV footage from the convent had suggested the involvement of four people, who also stole Rs 12 lakh.
