NEW DELHI : The suburban train commuters will be able soon to buy unreserved ticket on their mobiles and hop onto a local train without requiring a paper ticket or printout of the ticket so bought.
Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu on Wednesday launched a pilot project of rolling out the new facility on 15 suburban stations between Chennai Egmore and Tambaram on the Southern Railway.
Once the pilot project is successful, the facility will be extended to all cities having the suburban trains and that will be followed up by similar facility for unreserved journey by any train in the country. Mumbai already have the App-based ticketing system but it required printing of the ticket booked through mobile on the ATVMs (automatic ticket vending machines) installed at the railway stations. Launching the mobile application “utsonmobile” both for Android and Window mobiles developed by CRIS (Centre for Railway information systems) as part of “Operation 5 minutes” to let anybody buy the ticket within five minutes without the hassles of standing on long-winding queues, Prabhu said those in Chennai can download the App from Google Play or Window store.
