Bhayandar : The 42-year-old imposter who was caught by the Mira Road police on charges of impersonating a police officer has turned out to be a habitual offender who has graduated from being a fake Police Sub-Inspector to the Station-in-Charge, during his arrest on Tuesday Identified as Lalit Omprakash Sawant (42), the accused is a resident of Sai-Vaishnavi Building in the Chandansar Road area of Virar.
Sawant had apparently been moving around in the area as a Police Inspector in an Innova which had a board bearing the word “Police” on it.
However he ran out of luck on Tuesday when he was spotted near Jangid Circle by the actual Senior PI of Mira Road police station, Dhanaji Kshirsagar, during routine patrolling duty. The police team was shocked to find official patrolling books, weekly diaries, stickers of police emblems and even copies of summons and warrants in the possession of the fake cop. “The accused targeted unsuspecting people on the virtue of the fake copies of summons and warrants. Investigations were on to track the victims.” said Additional Superintended of Police, Sangramsing Nishaandar.
Prima-facie investigations have revealed that Sawant has a history of committing such impersonation, he was arrested by the Vasai police when he was found masquerading as a Police Sub-Inspector in 2007.” confirmed, Senior Police Inspector, Dhanaji Kshirsagar.
