Bengaluru : In a replay of the Nirbhaya incident that took place in Delhi in December 2012, a 22-year-old BPO employee from Madhya Pradesh was picked up by the driver and cleaner of a tempo in the heart of the city here and gang raped. Two men were arrested in this connection. Police said the accused were nabbed after the victim gave the random digits of the vehicle’s number plate.

As if that shame was not enough for the IT city, a school-going girl was cornered by four men in another horrific incident, stripped and photographed leading to her suicide.

In the gang rape case, the BPO employee was ironically raped in a moving van multiple times as the van moved up and down the road right opposite the busy Madiwala police station late on Saturday night and early Sunday morning.

The gritty girl later noted down the van’s registration number leading to the arrest of the culprits — Sunil (23) and Yogesh (27) — from Chickmaglur. They were working as drivers in the city for the past three years and had no criminal background, city police commissioner N S Megharik said.

The two have confessed to the crime, the commissioner added. A case has been registered under section 376 (D) (gang rape), 354 (A), (B) (sexual harassment), and 323 (punishment for hurt) of the IPC.

The embarrassed city police, busy with the visit of German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, swung into action in the morning itself and arrested the culprits by noon.

Like in the Delhi case, the victim was accompanied by her friend and was waiting for a bus on the busy Hosur main road at around 10 pm. The private Tempo Traveller offered to drop her at her paying guest accommodation. Despite warnings from the friend, the girl boarded the Traveller. There were four passengers in the Traveller, but they all got down on the way. As the van neared her destination, the driver refused to halt claiming the road was a one-way and that he would return after taking a U-turn. Instead, he took the van to a lonely spot. The cleaner then began shutting all the windows and threatened to push the victim out of the vehicle and run over her if she shouted.

The victim then realised that the cleaner and driver were under the influence of alcohol. While the vehicle was on the move, the cleaner began physically harassing her and tore her clothes off.
