Narendra Modi’s ‘bure din’ warning may be meaningful

New Delhi: It is not in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s style to go on the defensive on his government’s performance. He believes in the dictum ‘offence is the best form of defence.’ His warning to his detractors that his promise of ‘achhe din’ was for the common man, not for manipulators and wheeler dealers who must brace themselves for hard days reflects his resolve to meet the Congress’ offensive stance with retaliatory offensiveness.

As it appears, those who were left wondering why the Modi government had been soft on scamsters and political charlatans in the Manmohan Singh regime now perhaps will see a new Modi, a new warrior in action as he steps into his second year in office. Congressmen in particular have gone on the offensive in recent weeks, especially after Rahul Gandhi’s mysterious absence from India for two months came to an end. It may now be Modi’s time for a counter-offensive. Be it 2G or Coalgate or the long-forgotten Commonwealth Games scam, new skeletons could well begin to tumble out of cupboards. Coincidentally, the first salvo has been fired by the former chairman of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, Pradeep Baijal, who has made the sensational disclosure in a book that Dr Manmohan Singh had warned him of “harm” if he did not cooperate in the 2G case. First it was the CBI that held out this warning to him and then it came from the then prime minister, Baijal has claimed. Baijal writes in his book: “During the CBI enquiries I failed to understand why the CBI was so aggressive against me. They would threaten to harm me and my family and then dangle a carrot of sparing me if I implicated Ratan Tata and Arun Shourie . …. I can only surmise that they were all working , possibly along with the PM, Chidambaram and Kapil Sibal at different stages and guiding the CBI enquiry, getting files removed and making false statements in the media to make a case against the erstwhile TRAI.”

This is a serious charge which must be duly investigated to establish its veracity. The least the CBI needs to do is to cross-examine Dr Manmohan Singh and the other actors in the drama to unravel the real truths of the time. It is only a matter of speculation that the Modi government would now get pro-active in the matter of getting to the root of the scams—if for nothing else than for reining in the active lobby which is out to malign the Modi government.
