Tongue in cheek attack on Modi, RSS

New Delhi: A belligerent Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday tore into Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of not listening to his own colleagues, ignoring the voice of the people and destroying “six years of our work and thousands of hours of diplomacy” to put Pakistan in a diplomatic cage.

“We convinced the world that Pakistan is the global supporter of terror. But in one move, he let Pakistan out of the cage we had forced it into by gifting them a status equal to ours,” he said, pointing out how after the Mumbai blasts the UPA government had worked tirelessly to trap Pakistan and isolate it internationally.

Rahul was participating in the debate on motion of thanks to President Pranab Mukherjee in the Lok Sabha on his address to the joint session of Parliament. Narendra Modi was in the other House listening to Rajya Sabha Opposition leader Ghulam Nabi Azad speak on a similar motion of thanks.

Asserting that the Modi government has no diplomatic plan to corner Pakistan over terrorism, Rahul flayed him for dropping in at Lahore in December just for a photo opportunity with Nawaz Sharif and his family.

“What does the PM do? He decides to have a cup of tea with Nawaz Sharif. Without any thought, without any vision he decides to take a detour to Pakistan. He did not bother to ask anyone: Not the armed forces, not the intelligence people, not even the diplomats; he probably did not even ask (external affairs minister) Sushma ji. He just went there as if it is only his opinion that matters,” Rahul said.

Pakistan attacked this country in 26/11. Almost 200 people were butchered. And what does the PM do? Without any thought or vision, he decides to drop in for a cup of tea with Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif,” he said.

Rahul pointed out how Modi had created problems by landing in Mumbai during the 26/11 terror attack. “He went straight to the Oberoi hotel itself and disturbed the entire operation. He grabbed headlines while our people were dying.

Rahul said: “The PM still has the option of listening to what the country is trying to tell him. Listen to those around you — to Rajnathji, Advaniji, Sushma ji.” Accusing Modi of not listening to anybody and doing what he deems right, Rahul said: “The Prime Minister cannot run the country on only his opinion. The country is not the Prime minister. The Prime Minister is not the country.”

26/11: Headley’s cross-examination may run for 4 days

He was interrupted by a snide remark from the BJP benches: “What about India is Indira and Indira is India?” the reference being to a remark by Congress President Devkant Baruah during the Emergency.

Demanding to know whose opinion does the PM respect, except his own, Rahul taunted: “You have been taught by your teachers in the RSS that there is only one truth – Yours.”

Chiding Modi on the so-called “historic” Naga accord he had signed in August the details of which are not public even today, Rahul said: “As per media reports, even the officials in the Home Ministry and the Intelligence Bureau were not privy to the discussions that preceded the accord. We called our North East CMs and they were stunned. They had not heard a word about any accord. What had the government signed?”

In his 30-minute speech marked by wit and sarcasm Rahul repeatedly referred to the RSS, provoking the BJP MPs to rise in protest; he also mentioned Hindutva ideologue VD Savarkar a few times. When they objected to it, the Congress leader said: “Isn’t Gandhi ours and Savarkar yours? Have you all disowned Savarkar now? Please answer.”

‘Lakhvi said that 26/11 attack would be Pak’s revenge against India’

“You have been taught by your teachers in the RSS that there is only one truth in the universe — your own — and that nobody else’s opinion matters,” he said.

Rahul also taunted Finance Minister Arun Jaitley for announcing an amnesty scheme for those having black money. “Arun Jaitley ji has launched a new scheme, Fair and Lovely Scheme to turn black money white. Nobody will be jailed under the Fair and Lovely Scheme. Go to Jaitley Ji and your money will become white.”

The Congress vice-president recalled Jaitley’s budget speech on Monday and said: “For a moment, I thought it was P Chidambaram presenting the budget” as he had given the largest-ever allocation for the UPA’s scheme of MGNREGA.

New Delhi : The Congress created a ruckus in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, citing a media report on the business associates of Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel’s daughter Anar Patel. The associates were sold land near the Gir forest reserve for a song in 2010 when Narendra Modi was the chief minister and Anandiben the revenue minister. Opposition leader Ghulam Nabi Azad raked up the issue but the Deputy Chairman refused to entertain Azad’s notice, saying he can’t take cognizance of any newspaper reports. Azad insisted that it was a case of corruption involving Modi since he was then the state’s chief minister.
