Mumbai: Crossing the railway tracks cost three people their lives on Sunday afternoon. The deceased included a small child and two women; a fourth person is seriously injured. The incident happened near Kopar railway station. It was at around 3pm that a fast train — streaming through platform 3 and 4 — hit these people. The Railway Police officers said that the dead include 2-year-old Livesh Rane, Preeti Rane (26) and Sunita Bhangale (62). The Ranes stayed in Kalyan east while Sunita was from Kopar. Bhaskar Rane (65), who has been injured, is also from Kalyan.

Every day, at least 9 to 10 people die on rail tracks. Most of these victims cross railway lines with scant regard for their own safety. Earlier, in December, the Railways had held a high level meeting where they identified 183 locations in Mumbai suburban areas where people tend to cross tracks. This meeting was headed by Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal who had asked the authorities to reduce the deaths on tracks by fencing the boundary walls
