New Delhi : Member of Parliament from South Goa, Narendra Sawaikar on Thursday requested the lower house to release a piece of land vested with the Indian Army for constructing a war memorial at Ponda.
Sawaikar said in a statement in the House that depiction of the liberation movement there will be apt as it has the geographical advantage of being located at the centre of the state.
He referred to 6500 sq meters of land that was occupied by the Portuguese military and taken over by Indian Army on liberation of Goa. Many requests later, Indian Army released only 2530 sq metres of land on which a martyrs’ memorial was constructed.
To refurbish the structure, known as Kranti Maidan, local civic body has sought release of the remaining land vested with Indian Army, Sawaikar said, urging the Centre to intervene and hand over the remaining piece of land to Ponda municipal council.
