The upgradation, to be carried out under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana, will be done at a cost of Rs 200 crore each, the Centre contributing Rs 120 crore and the state’s share of Rs 80 crore.
The scheme was conceptualised in 2003 and so far 58 government medical colleges have been approved for upgradation under it. Work has been completed so far in 16 colleges while it is in progress at other places.
The upgradation involves strengthening of the existing departments, built super specialty blocks, trauma centres or other facilities as centres of excellence to become the composite centres for professional education, treatment, patient care and multi-skilling of the health workers.
