Kolkata : A group of irate mob set fire to the Mayureswar police station and two police vehicles before assaulting the police personnel on Friday in Birbhum district.

The police personnel, including the officer-in-charge fled the police station after the mob attacked the police station. This is within less than a week when irate mob attacked a police station.

On Sunday last a group of mob torched the Kaliachak police station in and set fire to vehicles belonging to police and Border Security Force in Malda district. The mob also severely assaulted the police personnel of the Kalichak police station.

The incident in Mayureswar took place when the police went to an adjacent area to recover the body of a youth who was run over by a dumper loaded with sand. When the police went to the spot, the local people attacked them and severely assault them.

 The second officer and some other police constables were injured in the incident. The mob again assembled infront of the Mayureswar police station and attacked the police station. They set fire to the police station and two police vehicles. The mob also destroyed the office furniture and chased the police personnel. As a result the policemen, including the officer-in-charge Rakesh Sadhukhan fled the police station and took shelter in safe place. He said that the mob attack continued for more than an hour.
