New Delhi: The Delhi government’s decision to make Punjabi compulsory in government schools in Delhi had nothing to do with the coming assembly polls in the state, the AAP said on Friday.

Aam Aadmi Party legislator Saurabh Bhardwaj said the development was just a “coincidence”.

“I believe different states keep going for elections at different times. It’s just a coincidence that Punjab elections are next year,” he told the media outside the Delhi assembly.

The opposition alleged on Friday in the assembly that the government was wasting money by advertising in other states.

Delhi government advertisements in several newspapers on Friday declared that Punjabi language would be compulsory in Delhi government-run schools, adding each school would have at least one Punjabi teacher.
