The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Monday transferred the Thanjavur student suicide case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). This comes the same day the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) team is visiting Thanjavur to have an enquiry with officials and investigate the case, India Today reports
The NCPCR team in Tamil Nadu had said that the state government was not cooperating with their enquiry, which is why a team from the Centre has been brought in to conduct the inquiry.
Team of the NCPCR led by Priyank Kanoongo, Chairperson of NCPCR, is on a visit to Thanjavur District, Tamil Nadu on January 30 and 31.
The child rights panel had received a complaint alleging that the minor girl was forced to illegally convert to Christianity and, upon opposing this conversion, corporal punishment was imposed on her. She was not allowed to go home and made to clean toilets and wash dishes by the school authorities. The complaint further says that as a result, the minor committed suicide by drinking pesticides.
