New Delhi : Conscious that many statements of their own leaders have become potent weapons for the opposition, parliamentary affairs minister M. Venkaiah Naidu cautioned his party men on Tuesday morning against walking into the trap laid by the opposition. Addressing MPs at the weekly BJP Parliamentary Party meeting, Naidu told the members not to ”fall prey to the tactics of the opposition and not to get provoked and make provocative statements”. Speaking of some recent incidents of violence in different states, Naidu said ”killing of innocents in the name of religion or caste is a blot on society and has to be condemned fiercely. Politicising such murders is also a crime and giving such crimes a communal colour is a sin”, he told the meet. According to Naidu, the opposition had unleashed game plan of spreading disinformation against the government and it was the job of party MPs to remain alert and expose the campaign.

The BJP has been constantly warning its MPs and spokespersons against ”walking into the trap” of a hostile opposition and refrain from making controversial comments. However, the party has been plagued for months by MPs like Sakshi Maharaj, Yogi Adityanath and ministers like VK Singh, Mahesh Sharma and Giriraj Singh who have embarrassed the government by their controversial remarks. Senior ministers are also worried that this has sent negative signals to the global community about the nature and intent of the government.
