Locals want Priyanka, bosses say no

New Delhi :  Given the striking resemblance to her famous grandmother, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is undoubtedly more charismatic than her brother Rahul who is struggling to put together his political career. No wonder, there is a demand from local Congressmen that she should enter the Lok Sabha from the family’s traditional seat Phulpur, but the party bosses have turned down this demand.

Locals want Priyanka, bosses say no

Phulpur is the parliamentary constituency of the nation’s first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, her great grandfather. He won it in all the three elections — 1952,1957 and 1962 — that he contested in his life time. Now the seat is no longer with the Congress.

Party general secretary Ajay Maken, however, has observed that for now Priyanka’s role is limited to campaigning for seats that are held by the family — Rae Bareli by her mother Sonia and Amethi by brother Rahul.

Party sources confirmed that local units have been advised not to pass such resolutions as these demands cause more embarrassment to the party leadership.

This is not the first time that any local unit of the Congress party has expressed such a desire. Indeed, such demands are ritualistic and keep surfacing every time before the elections.

However, notwithstanding the ritualistic nature of these demands, there is a section within the party that feels strongly that Priyanka should not delay the inevitable.
