Mumbai:  The State cabinet on Wednesday cleared a proposed Bill for carrying out amendments in the Maharashtra land revenue code, which will facilitate easy conversion of land holding category. This, in turn, would make development of land easier.

The Bill is to be tabled in the forthcoming Budget session, Revenue Minister Eknath Khadse said. “The leased government land properties in the state have been classified into three categories according to the land revenue code of 1966. While leasing out these lands they are generally categorised under “Occupants Class-2”. But, to be able to develop the land, it needs to be under the “Occupants Class-1”.

There are several limitations on the use and transfer of land under “Occupants Class-2”. Hence the government decided to make the process a bit easier to change the class of land holding from “Occupants Class-2” to “Occupants Class-1,” the minister said.

The state has around 1,04,396 occupants under “Class-2”. Allowing them to switch to the other category would help the state achieve rapid industrial and financial growth. But, the amendments would exclude hospitals, play grounds, educational institutions etc., he added.

The land revenue code bars change of use of land plots leased as ‘class-2’. But, now with the new amendments, the occupants would be able to change the use and develop the land plots by paying the appropriate premium, the minister said.
