GANDHINAGAR : Gujarat High Court judge, Justice J B Pardiwala, against whom 58 Rajya Sabha MPs have demanded impeachment for his remarks on reservation in his judgment has withdrawn the observation acceding to the state government plea in this regard.
According to the MPs’ contention, Justice Pardiwala in his ruling in the sedition case against Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS) leader Hardik Patel had made some remarks on the reservation system in India. The MPs saw red and moved a petition with chairman of the Rajya Sabha seeking initiation of impeachment proceedings against the judge – stating that it was an unconstitutional observation.
The judge had stated “if I am asked by anyone to name two things, which has not allowed the country to progress in the right direction, then the same is reservation and corruption. It is shameful for any citizen of this country to ask for reservation after 65 years of Independence. When our Constitution was framed, it was understood that the reservation was for a period of ten years, but unfortunately, it has continued even after 65 years of independence. The biggest threat, today, for the country is corruption”. He had further observed that reservation had only played the role of sowing seeds of discord amongst the people.”India must be the only country wherein some of the citizens crave to be called backward”.
