Jaipur: The ruling Congress is finding going tough in the state with an undercurrent flowing in favour of the BJP-post Pulwama attack. The Congress, which has 100 members in a House of 200 in the Vidhan Sabha, made a remarkable comeback in the December Vidhan Sabha election, but even the trends in the last Vidhan Sabha election, if taken as a pointer, do not give the ruling Congress more than 11 out of the 25 seats.

But post-Pulwama and the newfound popularity of Prime Minister Modi, the Congress find itself in a tough position. The Congress could not win even a single seat in the 2014 election as the BJP swept all the 25 seats.

Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and his deputy Sachin Pilot, who doubles as the Pradesh Congress president, during the recent meeting of the Congress Working Committee at Ahmadabad threw an idea to Priyanka Gandhi requesting her to contest from Rajasthan.

Both the leaders felt that Priyanka by contesting from the state would not only ensure a victory for herself but would also boost the party’s poll prospects. But Priyanka, who is the AICC general secretary in charge for the Congress for the eastern Uttar Pradesh decided not to contest poll.

Congress is facing the problem of finding suitable and winnable candidates for the 25 seats. The party which received the overwhelming support of the Muslims is morally bound to offer at least one of the 25 seats to a Muslim candidate. But it has not found a suitable candidate yet.

The party may field some of the ministers who command a good public rapport in their respective constituencies and are in a position to win. These include health minister Raghu Sharma, industries minister Parsadi Lal Meena, agriculture minister Lal Chand Kataria, mining minister Pramod Jain Bhaya and the chief whip Mahesh Joshi.
