New Delhi : The HRD Minister seems to be a little confused about her six-day stint at Yale University, where she attended a leadership programme and for which she was given a certificate. On Saturday, at a media conclave, she had described it as a ‘degree’ much to the consternation of her colleagues in the BJP government. Having been lampooned for her faux pas in the social media, she made belated amends on Monday and stated in a Tweet that her statement had been misconstrued.
“Unfortunate that the statement regarding my participation in a leadership program and certificate thereafter was misconstrued,” she tweeted soon after meeting Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Monday.
The HRD Ministry too clarified that Irani’s participation at a six-day long leadership course at Yale had resulted in her getting a certificate for the said programme and not a degree. ‘‘As an MP, Mrs Irani was invited to participate in a leadership program at Yale along with MPs from various political parties. Her participation and presence did result in her getting a ‘certificate’ for the said programme,” the HRD Ministry said. The clarification notwithstanding, Irani was equally categorical on Saturday at the media conclave when asked about her educational qualifications. “…People call me anpad (illiterate) (but) I do have a degree from Yale University…’’ While the jury is still out on Irani’s educational qualifications, one thing is for sure: Irani can do with some basic schooling in educational nomenclature.
