NEW DELHI :  The Congress on Wednesday took pride in the appointment of new NSUI (National Students Union of India) President Roji M John, a student leader from Kerala, not by nomination as in the past but through “election” in which opinion of the office-bearers of the party’s student body was sought.

Roji emerged as the preferred choice of 36 out of the 62 office-bearers, comprising 34 state presidents and 28 national office-bearers from across the country, and as such Congress President Sonia Gandhi approved his election, an NSUI press release said. It said Amrita Dhawan (Delhi), Mohit Sharma (Uttarakhand) and Kumar Raja (Jharkhand) who were the front-runners as per the voting, have been promoted as the national vice-presidents. All the office-bearers of NSUI, along with Roji and the vicepresidents met Rahul Gandhi at his residence to thank him for giving opportunity to have the president through election.
