Though the evacuation by air has ended, several Keralites are still said to be stranded at Sanaa airport

Thiruvananthapuram : A six-day-old baby girl, the youngest Indian national to be evacuated from war-ravaged Yemen, arrived safely in Kerala on Friday.

The newborn, suffering from jaundice and a serious lung ailment, accompanied by a doctor, was brought in an incubator in a special Air India flight from Djibouti at the Nedumbaserry international airport at Kochi on the wee hours.

The child, born premature, and her mother Raji Raju were rushed to the Amrita Institute of Medical Science (AIMS) on their arrival. The hospital sources said the condition of the child, who has been admitted to the Neo-natal Intensive Care Unit, was stable now. The state government has agreed to meet her medical expenses.

Raji, a nurse employed at Amran in Yemen gave birth to the baby in the eighth month of her pregnancy. The baby had contracted a serious lung ailment and was on life-support systems. Dr. Usha Nambiar, who accompanied the child, said that the child had not faced any health problems during the flight. As many as 382 Keralites from Yemen reached Kochi in the wee hours of Friday. Though the evacuation by air has been ended, several Keralites are still said to be stranded at Sanaa airport. Hundreds of people had thronged the Sanaa airport to catch the last flight and many had to return disappointed.

The evacuees, who arrived at Kochi, said many of their friends were stranded in the Yemeni capital. They will find it difficult to return home in the absence of flights. Reports from New Delhi quoting External Affairs ministry sources said that the evacuation of Indians through ships will continue. Naval vessel, INS Tarkash, has already left for Aden from Djibouti to continue the rescue operation. The Navy sources informed that INS Mumbai and a ship from Kavaratti were also ready to carry out evacuations. However, the people trapped in Sanaa will have to undertake a road journey either to Al Hodeida or to Aden to catch the ships.

Hodeida is the port closest to Sanaa. But the road journey from Sanaa to Hodeida is not considered safe under the present conditions. The family members of the people trapped in Sanaa are in panic. The closure of the Indian Embassy at Sanaa has confounded their worries further.

With this the total number of people pulled out by India from Yemen crossed 5600.

This includes 960 nationals from foreign countries.
