NEW DELHI : The Congress on Thursday demanded action against a hospital in Noida owned by Union Tourism and Culture Minister Mahesh Sharma for death of a newly born girl child.

Reacting to the child’s death as the hospital refused to accept payment in the scrapped Rs 1,000 notes, the party tweeted: “BJP Govt should take action against its own minister’s hospital, which violated Govt orders and did not accept the old currency.”

Since the banks were closed on Wednesday and all ATMs shut on Wednesday and Thursday, the government had identified some places where the old notes will be accepted till Friday midnight and hospitals were one of them.

In another tweet, the Congress urged the government “to take urgent measures to improve implementation of exchange of old notes with the new ones as it’s causing hardship to people.”

Inquiries, however, showed that the Kailash Hospital of Dr Sharma was not the exception in refusing the demonetised notes. Most of the private hospitals in Delhi and the national capital region also refused to accept the old notes and turned away the patients who had no means to quickly secure the new notes that banks started dispensing from Thursday.
