Says such an attitude is taking us towards conflicts

Ninora (Ujjain) : Stating that global warming and terrorism were the biggest challenges the world is facing today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi here on Saturday said that ‘holier than thou’ attitude was driving people towards conflicts and this attitude needed to be shunned.

“My way is better than yours. This is what is taking us to conflicts. Let us look within and see how we can change this attitude. We can’t keep going horizontal, it’s time to go vertical,” he said, while addressing the valedictory session of a 3-day Vichar Mahakumbh, organised on the sidelines of Simhastha in Ujjain.

“There are differences in our country which outsiders see as conflict. The world conducts seminars on conflict management. We inherit conflict management because of our mythologies,” the PM said.

Hailing arrangements at Simhastha, Modi said the Kumbh Mela management is a subject of study for universities across the world.

“The world looks at our election management system with astonishment and conducts studies to decode its success. The universities across the world have another subject for a case study in India and that’s management of Kumbh Mela,” he said. “During the one-month-long religious congregation, people equal to the population of a small nation visit Kumbh Mela. How things are managed at such a big event should be researched,” he added. Applauding the people, who gave up their LPG subsidies, he said: “I had urged well-off people to give up their LPG subsidies and more than 1 crore people surrendered it.”

“A woman inhales smoke of 400 cigarettes a day while cooking food on a traditional chullah. Amount saved from ‘GiveItUp campaign’ will now be turned to the poor. In three years, five-crore poor families will get LPG connection and get relief from chullah smoke,” he said.

In an apparent reference to the US presidential polls under way, he said that politicians campaigning there saying they would preserve family values. “They are giving pre-eminence to family values now. But we have been born into it,” he said.

Modi also released 51-point ‘’Simhastha Declaration’’ jointly with Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena and Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan.

Sirisena said that India and Sri Lanka shared strong relations which are strengthening with the passing of times.

“Invitation to such conferences to leaders of other nations mirrors our strong bond,” he said.

Chauhan said that the ‘Simhastha Declaration’ would be sent to the United Nations and countries across the world. He said that Madhya Pradesh would encourage farmers to grow fruits bearing trees so that their earning could increase. “Tree farming is not a yearly crop. It will take some years for trees to bear fruits. Till fruits are grown, the government will give compensation to the farmers,” he said adding that the government would also encourage farmers for organic farming. “We wish to become the first ‘organic state’ in the country,” he went on to add.
