The Congress has said that there is mounting anger against the Akali Dal-BJP govt
New Delhi : With widespread protests over the desecration of ”birs” of Guru Granth Sahib continuing throughout the state of Punjab, the Congress party has demanded imposition of President’s rule in the state.
At a joint press briefing, party general secretary Shakeel Ahmed and state unit president Pratap Singh Bajwa charged that the Akali Dal-BJP government led by chief minister Parkash Singh Badal has lost the confidence of the people and has failed to handle the situation. “There has been mounting anger against the state government and its retaliatory policies have led to an explosive situation,” said Bajwa while charging that the father-son duo of the chief minister and deputy chief minister are mired deeply into corruption.
The two leaders pointed out that during their visit to the state three days ago, they found it difficult to move on highways due to the road blocks that have been put at every stage. The people brandishing swords have come on the streets and are demanding the resignations of the Akali ministers and legislators, they claimed. Claiming that the leading agrarian state of the country, has been pushed into desperation by the policies of the SAD-BJP government, Bajwa said the last straw came when the holy book first went missing from Kotkapura in Faridkot and then was desecrated. “This is the handiwork of state agencies to shift the people”s attention from the failures of the state government,” he charged.
Condemning the police firing on the protesters, Bajwa said the kin of the two deceased persons should be paid compensation at the rate of Rs 35 lakh each.” This is the same amount that was paid after a gruesome incident near Moga in which a girl was thrown out of a bus after being raped,” he added.
