Gandhinagar : It was a shock for the Gujarat police on Tuesday when it’s Special Operations group seized 60 kgs of gold worth over Rs.16 cr from outside the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel airport in Ahmedabad and arrested six persons.
According to A K Sharma, Joint Commissioner of Police, Ahmedabad, this qualifies as the biggest catch of smuggled gold in recent times and gives prima facie indication of a thriving international gold smuggling syndicate at work. Interrogation is going on and the extent of the operation will emerge thereafter.
The Crime branch head said that a person identified as Wilfred D’Costa would fly in the gold from Dubai or some other West Asian country and pass through the green channel at the Mumbai airport. Thereafter he would be joined by some more of his accomplices who would then fly to Ahmedabad.
