The Centre on Wednesday issued an order to bring online news portals and content providers under the aegis of the Information and Broadcasting ministry. The notification, which bears the President's name at the end, states that online films and audio-visual programmes, and online news and current affairs content will now fall under the authority of the Ministry.

The changes made by the President to the Government of India (Allocation of Business) Rules, 1961 ensure that effective immediately, film and AV programmes that are made available by online content providers as well as news and current affairs content on online platforms will be added to the “Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (Soochana Aur Prasaran Mantralaya)" segment.

Further details awaited.
