Vellore (TN): A teary-eyed teenage girl today waved a liquor bottle during a “Namakku Naame” campaign of DMK second-in-command M K Stalin here, seeking an assurance that prohibition would be implemented if his party came to power next year. The emotionally charged up girl student told Stalin that she lost her father to the “evil of alcohol consumption”.

“Vellore is infamous for its liquor outlets, liquor consumption is an evil, I lost my father due to it,” she said. She wanted implementation of prohibition if DMK came to power in the Assembly elections scheduled to be held next April-May.

In response, Stalin said, “Don’t worry, for sure total prohibition will be implemented (if DMK is voted to power). Steps will be taken for it. Our party chief Kalaignar (M Karunanidhi) has decided to change this culture of liquor consumption. Don’t worry.” DMK had few months back declared that it would bring in prohibition if voted to power.

Promising positive changes including prohibition, Stalin said the elected representatives would be made to visit general public periodically to address their grievances. “You need not wait for long. When DMK comes to power, we will ensure that elected representatives, be it MLAs, MPs, municipal councillors or Ministers, will visit you to listen to your grievances and solve them,” he said. He also said his party would give preference to youth and urged them to involve themselves in public life for the growth of the nation.

The DMK leader is in the third leg of his “Namakku Naame” pre-poll tour across Tamil Nadu to mobilise support for his party. He will end his campaign, that began on September 20 in Kanyakumari District, on November 7 in Tiruvallur District.
