Gas leakage at Bhilai steel plant; six hospitalised

Raipur : A leakage of a hazardous gas was on Friday reported at a section of Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) in Chhattisgarh’s Durg district and six employees, including an officer, of the plant were hospitalised following its inhalation.

The affected employees were discharged after medical examination and are out of danger, officials said.

Six employees engaged in maintenance job at the Steel Melting Shop (SMD) 2 section of BSP were shifted to hospital for observation after detection of excess concentration of a hazardous gas at their workplace, a public relations officer of the plant told PTI.

“A team of six employees of power and electrical maintenance (PEM) department of the plant, including one officer and five non-executives were engaged in carrying out a planned maintenance job in Booster Fan in Convertor Shop of SMS2,” he said. The maintenance was being carried out since May 30. Another team from the mechanical section of convertor shop, including two officers and seven non-executives, were also working in the same section.
