Congress leader Rahul Gandhi today took a sharp swipe at the Narendra Modi-led central government alleging that the Prime Minister, with his poor vaccine strategy, was responsible for the second wave of COVID-19 in the country. Gandhi also said that the COVID-19 death rate put out by the Centre was inaccurate and underreported and if it did not act immediately it will be left grappling with several successive waves of the pandemic, as the virus goes on mutating. "The Prime Minister's 'nautanki' is the reason behind the second wave of COVID19 in India. He did not understand COVID19. India's death rate is a lie. The government should tell the truth," Rahul Gandhi said at a virtual press conference.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal today said Delhi has somehow gained control over the second wave of COVID-19 and the government will now start the process of lifting the lockdown gradually, starting with resumption of construction activities and reopening of factories for one week from Monday. This doesn't mean the fight against the deadly disease has ended, he stressed. However, if the cases start rising again, we will have to stop the unlock exercise, he added and appealed to people not to step out unless it is absolutely necessary.

The Calcutta High Court today granted interim bail to two West Bengal ministers Subrata Mukherjee and Firhad Hakim, TMC MLA Madan Mitra and former Kolkata mayor Sovan Chatterjee, arrested by CBI in the Narada sting tapes case. Imposing conditions, a five-judge bench of the high court directed the four accused persons, who are under house arrest, to furnish bail bonds of Rs 2 lakh each. The bench directed them not to make any comment in public or in media with regard to the matter. They were also directed to meet the investigating officer through virtual mode as and when required.

The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has arrested Siddharth Pithani, a roommate of Sushant Singh Rajput, in a drug case linked to the Bollywood actor's death last year, an official said today. Pithani was arrested from Hyderabad and brought to Mumbai, he said. Pithani was Rajput's friend and was also staying with the late actor at his Bandra residence in suburban Mumbai, he said. The alleged role of Pithani in the drug case, that emerged post the actors death, came to light during the NCB's investigation and hence he was arrested, the official said. A team of the NCB, led by Zonal Director Sameer Wankhede, had launched a search for Pithani who was traced in Hyderabad, the official said.

Equity benchmark Sensex rallied 308 points and NSE Nifty hit a fresh record today, tracking gains in index heavyweights Reliance Industries, HDFC twins and Kotak Bank amid positive cues from global markets. Further, decline in daily COVID-19 caseload too bolstered investor sentiment, analysts said. The 30-share BSE index ended 307.66 points or 0.60 per cent higher at 51,422.88. The broader NSE Nifty surged 97.80 points or 0.64 per cent to close at its fresh peak of 15,435.65.
