New Delhi : Tehelka Editor Tarun Tejpal, who has been denied interim relief by the Delhi High Court, on Tuesday tried to politicize the case by pointing an accusing finger at the BJP and the Goa Police.
He claimed that the FIR in which he has been booked for rape was registered in “pursuance of a well-planned criminal conspiracy to falsely prosecute” him.
Tejpal further claimed that the BJP wanted to satisfy a “long standing grudge” against him for his brand of investigative journalism. The reference was to a sting operation conducted on leaders of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance government in 2001, which had exposed corruption in defence deals. It resulted in the resignations of BJP president Bangaru Laxman and defence minister George Fernandes.
In his anticipatory bail plea filed in the High Court, Tejpal stated, “The bias of the BJP against the applicant (Tejpal) is a well known fact and had earlier nastily manifested when Tehelka was targeted after its expose of corrupt defence deals in 2001 and forced to shut down operations for over three years. Many of its employees were also implicated in false criminal cases.”
The petition further touted
Tejpal’s secular credentials: it states that throughout his career the Tehelka honcho has strived for transparency and accountability in public life and has been an active campaigner against attempts to tarnish the secular fabric of the country.
