NEW DELHI : The Election Commission (EC) on Thursday cancelled the Rajya Sabha by-election from Jharkhand that was announced with seven others in six states to fill up the vacancies.

The Jharkhand  vacancy was caused by the resignation of Dr K D Singh on February 19, but the by-election had to be called off since an election petition is pending in the Jharkhand High Court at Ranchi against his election, the EC sources said.

They said the Commission has decided not to hold the by-election to fill up the vacancy till the disposal of the said election petition.  Singh of Trinamul Congress got himself elected in 2010 in what became known as a “cash-for-vote” scam after a sting operation exposed six MLAs caught on camera apparently negotiating for money from Singh to sell their votes. The sting operation showed the MLAs purportedly demanding Rs 50 lakh to Rs 2 crore.
