New Delhi: With the festive season approaching, a group of East Delhi residents today moved the National Green Tribunal against the looming threat to the environment and ecology of their area by Ramleela performance in a park maintained by it. A bench headed by Justice U D Salvi issued notice to the East Delhi Municipal Corporation(EDMC) and Adarsh Ramleela Committee while seeking its reply by October 8.

The directions came during hearing of a plea filed by Janta Welfare Association based in Pandav Nagar area opposing the Ramleela performance from October 12 at a local park. “The applicant society is maintaining a park in Pandav Nagar which is used by residents of Pandav Nagar for morning walk, playground for children and by aged and retired people.

“The park is the property of East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC). There are more than 500 plants and trees in the park which are planted by the residents of D-block. For conducting Ramleela, the committee has started using deadly chemicals and acids on trees to set their tent in the park by destroying the nature,” the plea said.

The association has claimed that the residents have lodged a complaint to the police as well as EDMC but no action has been taken against them who are damaging the environment by using chemicals on plants.

It has sought directions to EDMC not to allot the park to the Ramleela committee saying it would cause damage to the environment and destroy the natural vegetation.
