Attackers beat officer with helmet and metallic punch
New Delhi : Assistant Commissioner of Delhi Police was attacked by three people, including a woman and a juvenile in an incident of road rage, police said on Thursday.
ACP Amit Singh was going to his office when his car was hit by another car in Nizamuddin area of south Delhi around 4.30 pm. He suffered a fracture in his nose and received head injuries in the attack when he tried to intervene in a fight between his driver and another motorist whose car had hit Singh’s official vehicle.
The ACP, who was in plain clothes, was bleeding profusely and was rushed to AIIMS trauma centre where he is undergoing treatment. Police said the car, which was driven by a juvenile had hit Singh’s car near Lodhi crematorium following which his driver had a verbal altercation with the minor.
Amid the verbal duel, a man and a woman on a bike arrived at the spot and started hitting the driver. When Singh tried to intervene, the man hit him on his head with the helmet from behind first and then punched him on his face several times, police said.
They said the biker was wearing ‘metallic punch’ and had hit Singh hard on his face while the woman and the juvenile also rained blows on him.
“It is a case of road rage. The incident took place when our ACP was on his way to his office in Lodhi colony in an unmarked car without a beacon. He only had his driver with him. Singh was in plain clothes. He is out of danger. But, he will remain under observation,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Rajiv Ranjan told PTI.
Singh’s driver got down from the car after it was hit and signalled the driver of the other vehicle to drive properly, but he did not pay attention and continued his rash driving.
“Singh’s driver again went to him to make him understand about the need to drive properly which led to an altercation between them. Watching this, Singh came out from the vehicle to protect the driver, who was surrounded by the gathering that had assembled there. Meanwhile, a man on a motorcycle, who was probably with the minor driving the car also stopped there,” said the police statement.
All the three attackers were detained and taken to Hazrat Nizamuddin Police station. This is the third incident where policemen have been attacked in the city in the last one week.
On Monday, a constable was gunned down in Vijay Vihar area of Outer Delhi. In another incident on Saturday, three alleged criminals had opened fire on two Delhi Police constables in busy Connaught Place area.
The police, however said that the case cannot be compared with the earlier two incidents as the attackers were not aware that they were assaulting a Delhi Police official. At the time, of the incident, Singh was in plain cloths, as the officials of the anti-terror unit, Special Cell do not usually wear uniform. His Innova car also did not bear any signs of it being a police vehicle.
The 35-year-old ACP is a direct Delhi and Andaman & Nicobar Islands Police Service (DANIPS) Officer and has only spent four years in the service. “Singh was the in-charge of the newly formed southwest unit of the Special Cell. He is currently unfit for statement,” Ranjan said.
Singh’s driver has been treated for his injuries and he too is out of danger, police said.
