New Delhi: A three-year-old boy, who has lost his parents and grandmother in a fatal accident in the national capital, is being looked after by his grandfather, a senior police officer said on Thursday. The boy’s parents, Ruchi (27) and Sumit Singhal (29), and grandmother Reeta Singhal (65) were crushed to death after a sand-laden dumper overturned on their Audi car at Rohini, while they were returning home from a wedding in Gurgaon on Wednesday night.

The boy had a miraculous escape but was trapped inside the car. His cries could be heard by the witnesses and the police. Subsequently, he lost consciousness but was rescued by fire department and disaster management teams. The boy was taken to a hospital, the officer said, adding that even though he had not suffered any external injuries, they got his medical examination done to rule out any internal injury. After the doctors declared that the boy did not suffer any internal injury, he was handed over to his grandfather, the officer said.

The grandfather of the boy runs a business, which was being taken care of by the boy’s father. The child’s extended family had expressed worry about how would he grow up without his parents. A neighbour of the Singhal family, who did not wish to be identified, said the boy’s aunt and grandfather were taking care of him. “The tragedy struck at a time when the family was looking forward to fixing the marriage of the boy’s aunt. The family of a prospective groom was planning to visit the Singhals coming Sunday,” he said.

Witnesses said when the boy was rescued safely from the mangled remains of the car, all of them had heaved a sigh of relief. There were claps and cheers when the boy was pulled out of the car, which was completely destroyed under the weight of the dumper. He was found on the back seat of the car.
