There is hardly any good news for the Congress these days. So, the decision of the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party to continue with their alliance for the coming assembly elections in Maharashtra, which are expected to be held by the end of this year, could bring some cheer in the gloomy Rahul Gandhi camp.

The two parties won a measly six of the state’s 48 seats in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections — four seats had gone to the NCP and two to the Congress. Since the BJP and the Shiv Sena have already expressed their intent to contest the election together, there was little scope for the Congress and the NCP to go solo. The two had snapped their 15-year-old alliance in 2014.
