New Delhi : As the saffron brigade remained unrelenting in unleashing its vitriolic word power against voices critical of the ‘present atmosphere of intolerance’, the Congress questioned the very rationale of the BJP-RSS trying to impose their ideology over the country.

“The nationalism which the RSS talks of is not the nationalism that India practices. Only 31 per cent of the people voted for the BJP, the rest of India (majority) has rejected the BJP-RSS ideology,” said Congress spokesperson Anand Sharma.

At a media briefing, he said that the prime minister is held in high esteem because he leads the country. ”But Prime Minister Narendra Modi is sticking to the same approach that he used for the campaign as the prime ministerial candidate. This is doing incalculable harm to the democratic polity of the country, as the dialogue between the ruling party and the opposition is getting bitter by the day,” he added.

Referring to the recent attacks on Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan, he said: ”If any citizen of India doesn’t agree with the government, the BJP-Sangh parivar comes together and targets him or her. This is highly condemnable.” He added that Shah Rukh is an icon of cosmopolitan India and he has the right to speak his mind as a citizen of India, and the BJP can’t question anyone’s patriotism.

Sharma’s observations came as a follow-up to a party chief Sonia Gandhi-led protest march to Rashtrapati Bhavan with top party leaders against the “climate of intolerance” and her charge that Modi was “endorsing” incidents of hate by his “silence”.

Arguing that “cosmetic regrets” by the Prime Minister would not “befool” people, Sharma demanded action against those vitiating the atmosphere.

“If Prime Minister is sincere, what prevents him from removing such people from the government, such Members of Parliament from his party, and also taking action against those who are not in Parliament but are senior functionaries of the BJP,” he added.
