New Delhi: The Congress on Tuesday expressed concern over the terror of lynching raising head again since the Modi government came to power for the second term.
"It’s been 1 month and 14 hate crimes since BJP took to power for their second term. The government should admit that hate crimes have sky rocketed under their rule and must come up with a plan to put an end to such barbarianism," the Congress tweeted.
It said: "In the last 5 years, India has seen a disturbing trend of heinous crimes acted upon minority groups and the govt remained silent. The new BJP govt must take serious action to end mob lynching & hate crimes before India turns into the hate capital of the world."
Congress member Shashi Tharoor also raised the issue of lynching in the Lok Sabha through a supplementary on the question of the cow protection.
He wanted an assurance from the government that it should recognise only those cow protection committees that meet the yardsticks of the animal welfare board to ensure the goons do not resort to violence in the name of the cow protection.
