New Delhi : The Election Commission on Thursday issued a show-cause notice to AAP for violation of the model code of conduct. In question is the conduct of its party activists in a protest outside the BJP headquarters in the Capital on Wednesday.
The show-cause was served on a complaint lodged by a BJP delegation led by its vice-president Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi. In follow-up action, the police also took in custody AAP leaders Ashutosh and Shazia Imli, who had led the demonstration at the BJP headquarters.
Reacting sharply to the AAP protest, Rajya Sabha Opposition leader Arun Jaitley tweeted that “if Joseph Goebbels was re-born, he surely would have joined the Aam Aadmi Party.” He went on to assert that AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal and his leaders were following the propaganda minister of Hitler who preached that “if you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it.”
BJP spokesperson Meenakshi Lekhi, in turn, alleged at a press conference that a minor issue with Kejriwal in Gujarat has been blown up as if it impacts national security. She saw in it the usual diversionary tactics of the Congress every time a scam starts unraveling and asserted that AAP has been unleashed this time to hide the miserable attendance at every Congress rally. She further asserted that “AAP happens to be the latest goon squad hired by the dirty tricks department of the Congress.”
Asserting that AAP is not a threat to the BJP or its prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, Lekhi said: “They are not even a national party of any consequence. Everything about them is murky, including their fund sources. The party’s core members hail from Sonia Gandhi’s extra-constitutional NGO called the NAC — the National Advisory Council.”
Lekhi further claimed that the Gujarat police was only doing its duty by stopping Kejriwal’s motorcade on Wednesday, which required permission in view of the model code of conduct coming into force.
Being a former IRS officer, Kejriwal ought to be familiar with the legalities as often revenue officials are drafted for poll duties. Apparently, he was “looking for cheap publicity in a sponsored programme of the Congress,” she asserted.
Lekhi further alleged that Kejriwal, a self-proclaimed anarchist and an alleged CIA agent, has been instructed by his “masters” to divert the general public attention from the CBI probe into AgustaWestland scam in which the key middlemen are hinting towards the role of the Congress chief and her family members.
