Centre hikes excise duties on petrol and diesel

New Delhi : The Centre has hiked excise duty on petrol by one rupees and 60 paise per litre and the same on diesel by 40 paise a litre to mop up additional revenue to meet budgetary targets. According to a Central Board of Excise and Customs notification, the basic excise duty on unbranded or normal petrol was increased from 5.46 rupees per litre to 7.06 rupees a litre. After including additional and special excise duty, the total levy on petrol will be 19.06 rupees per litre as against present levy of 17.46 rupees. Similarly on unbranded or normal diesel, excise duty has been increased from 4.26 rupees per litre to 4.66 rupees a litre. After including special excise duty, total incidence of excise duty on diesel will be 10.66 rupees per litre as against present 10.26 rupees. The excise duty on branded petrol has been hiked from 6.64 rupees to 8.24 rupees per lire. Special and additional excise duty of 12 rupees per litre will continue as before.
