Cong uses CAG report, which indicted the Gujarat govt for favouring some big industrialists, to attack BJP and Modi

New Delhi : This is a role reversal that the Congress party is relishing.

For years, it was at the receiving end when the reports from the Comptroller and Auditor General ( CAG) appeared in the public domain. The opposition BJP would then paralyse the functioning of the parliament, sometimes one full session, and the Congress would plead that the report should be first examined by the Public Accounts Committee.

“Now there is a report from the CAG about the state of Gujarat. It relates to the period when the current prime minister was the chief minister of Gujarat. Going by the BJP’s own logic, the CAG report is gospel truth and this implies that Modi should be held accountable here and now without any delay,” said Congress spokesperson Shaktisinh Gohil at the party’s daily press briefing. Citing from the report tabled in the state assembly last Friday, Gohil said that it points out that there were irregularities amounting to more than Rs.25,000 crores including undue benefits over Rs.1500 crores to Reliance Petroleum, Adani group and Essar Power.

There was non-submission of utilization certificates of Rs.9121 crores of central grants, and another set of grants totalling Rs.13049 crores remained unused. “So, this is the reality of the Gujarat model that has been sold to the entire country as something of a magic wand that would transform the entire economic landscape,” charged Gohil.

The Congress leader also charged that the benefits provided by the Gujarat government to the three corporates now throw some light on the source of funds that powered the Modi campaign. ”The special aircraft in which he traversed from one public meeting to other, the giant screens, and the hi-tech 3-D public meetings were all possible due to a generous helping from such corporate friends,” he added.

Gohil also presented documents to demonstrate the contrary to prime minister Modi’s claim that during his tenure as chief minister in Gujarat the villages used to get 24×7 power supply the reality was that the state never had more than 8 hours of power supply for the farmers and that too at staggered odd hours. ”In so far as single phase power supply is concerned, it was available 24×7 long before he came to power. So his narrative in the parliament that he had achieved something that had been described as impossible by a Congress leader ( late Amarsinh Chaudhary) is not factually correct,” he added.“ Now it is for the party’s parliamentary leadership to decide as to what should be the enxt step in respect to this serious matter,” he said while adding that he has provided all the relevant documents to them.
