The Border Security Force (BSF) on Friday opened fire at a suspected Pakistani surveillance drone after it tried to venture into the Indian territory on the International Border here, officials said.

The drone was spotted by the alert BSF personnel in Arnia sector on the outskirts of Jammu around 4.25 am, they said.

The officials said the suspected drone returned to the Pakistani side when the border guards fired half a dozen rounds to bring it down. “Alert BSF troops fired at a small quadcopter belonging to Pakistan today (Friday) morning as it was trying to cross the International Border (IB) in the Arnia sector. Due to this firing, it returned immediately," a BSF spokesperson said.

He said it was meant for carrying out surveillance of the area. Security forces in Jammu and Kashmir are on high alert following the Sunday’s drone attack on the Indian Air Force (IAF) station here in Jammu.

Pak role in drone attack on IAF station can’t be ruled out: DGP

Jammu

The involvement of Pakistan in the drone attack on an Air Force station in Jammu cannot be ruled out as the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) is strongly suspected to be behind it, J&K Police chief Dilbag Singh said on Friday.

He said the use of armed drones by Pakistan-based terrorists is a ‘very serious threat’ to the security system and there was a need to have a relook at the security of vital places and persons.

“We have got very serious and strong suspicion that LeT is involved in this case.... Since LeT is involved and the outfit is run from Pakistan, so in a way Pakistan’s involvement cannot be ruled out,” the police chief told reporters on the sidelines of a function in Kathua district.

To what extent Pakistani agencies are involved would be known only when the probe proceeds further, he said, adding, “They were planning to trigger a blast at a crowded place to cause the largest possible casualties.”

DRDO: D-4 drone can prevent attacks

New Delhi

The counter-drone technology developed by Defence Research and Development Organisation could help Army swiftly detect and destroy drones that pose a security threat to the country. As per Dr Jillelamudi Manjula, Director General - Electronics and Communication Systems (ECS), DRDO, the D-4 drone system could detect close-range attacks like the one in Jammu on Sunday that injured two Army jawans. “D-4 drone system would’ve detected attack (in Jammu) as its range is over 4 km. The system’s aim is to detect rogue drones that are likely to attack most vulnerable places. The system has got multiple sensors and two different counterattacks to destroy the rogue drones,” she said.
