New Delhi: BJP’s national office-bearers and all state party presidents, organising secretaries and state in-charges are meeting here on Thursday to draw up calendar for the overdue organisational elections.
BJP president Amit Shah is expected to offer his resignation since he has now become the country’s home minister. He is also expected to propose that the new president may be duly elected only after the organisational elections are over, setting November as the deadline for their completion.
Amit Shah, whose three-year term as BJP chief had ended in January, was asked to continue in the position as the party had put on hold organisational elections to focus on the Lok Sabha polls. The 2-day meeting may also discuss appointment of new state presidents in some states.
The organisational election process begins with the membership drive for which a separate meeting of the general secretaries has been convened by Shah next Tuesday. The party sources said each general secretary will get specific targets for the membership drive.
Maharashtra, Haryana and Jharkhand, where the Assembly elections are due later this year, will hold the organisational elections later. Only last Sunday, Shah had separate meetings with the party’s chief ministers and other senior leaders of these states to draw up plans for selection of candidates and campaign.
The exercise to finish organisational polls will take at least four months and as such the national president in place of Shah may be elected by December. Convention is to elect the president by consensus and he then appoints the national office-bearers.
