Jaipur/New Delhi : BJP president Amit Shah on Friday suspended Kota North MLA Prahlad Gunjal from the party with immediate effect for allegedly misusing his position to threaten a chief medical officer (CMO).
Gunjal has been already booked by the police on Thursday for threatening the officer.
The punitive action came after all government doctors in Rajasthan went on a two-hour boycott of work on Friday morning. Gunjal had expressed regrets for his “emotional outburst” even as CMO R N Yadav resigned, protesting against the “mental harassment” by him over the transfer of a male nurse.
He had threatened the CMO of dire consequences for not issuing transfer orders to the kin of a party worker. Just before his suspension from the party, Gunjan had sent his explanation to both Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje and state BJP president, regretting his conduct. “I used some words which were not to be used. If my words have hurt anyone or caused agony to anyone, then I regret it,” the letter said.
The state BJP had issued a show cause notice to Gunjal on Thursday seeking his explanation and informed the party headquarters about the development.
It is for the third time that Gunjal has been suspended, each time the BJP withdrew the suspension because of the pressure exerted by the strong Gujjar community to which Gunjal belongs.
An audio clip of their conversation was circulated on WhatsApp. During the mobile conversation with the medical officer, Gunjal is heard telling the officer, “I will skin you alive. I will punch you. You won”t sleep at night. I will put such fear in you, I want the order by tomorrow.”
Police registered a First Information Report (FIR) on Thursday evening against Gunjal under various sections of IPC for intimidating and threatening the officer over phone.
Gunjal furious at the officer, for not allowing the nurse’s transfer, he threatened him by saying that he will beat him to pulp. “I told you he is family. How dare you throw attitude? I will punch you. I want the order by tomorrow, or else… I hope you understand what I am trying to say. I want the order by tomorrow,” he said. The police booked Gunjal under various sections of IPC for intimidating and threatening the officer over phone.
Gunjal denied that he had used threats with Yadav although he did admit that he had called the CMHO in connection with the
“I did call the CMHO and ask him for the transfer of a male nurse, who is the brother-in-law of a party worker. But I did not threaten or intimidate him. But, yes, I scolded him as I was very angry,” Gunjal said.
He added that he had asked for the transfer on four occasions but the CMHO had not complied. Later, Yadav reached Dadabari police station and lodged a case against the MLA.
Meanwhile, the party has asked Gunjal to give an explanation.
In the previous regime of the BJP between 2003 to 2008, Gunjal irked at not being made a minister, fought a verbal duel with Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje and was expelled. But he was later reinstated.
