New Delhi: BJP MLAs are convinced that only they have patent rights to actors and actresses. So, when it emerged that Haryanvi actress and stage performer Sapna Chaudhary is ‘joining’ the Congress Party and may be fielded against Hema Malini in Mathura, all hell broke loose.
Ashwini Kumar Chopra, a BJP leader from Haryana, said, “Congress mein thumke lagane wale jo hain woh hi thumke lagayenge, yeh unko dekhna hai ki thumke lagane hain ya chunaav jeetna hai (The party needs to prioritise what they want to do, whether they want to dance or win elections).
BJP legislator from Uttar Pradesh Surendra Singh went a step further, asserting that Chaudhary belongs to the same profession as Gandhi’s, back in Italy. ‘‘Rahul ji ki mata ji bhi Italy mein isi peshe se thi. Jaise aapke pitaji ne Sonia ji ko apna bana liya tha, aap bhi Sapna ko apna banaye. (Rahul [Gandhi’s] mother too is from the same profession. The way his father made her his own, Rahul should accept Sapna, too).
The MLA also added that he is glad that Gandhi was disillusioned with politicians and was now turning to “dancers.” Singh also went a step further and said that the country will never accept a “dancer” in politics, especially when such a “charitravaan” and honest man as PM Narendra Modi was its leader. Visibly upset, Sapna Choudhary on Sunday clarified that she was not joining the Congress and said her photograph with Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, that went viral on social media, was an old one.
“I have not joined the Congress party. The photograph with Priyanka Gandhi is an old one. I have met her several times before. I am not going to campaign for any political party,” she told reporters here. About her political ambitions, she said she was not joining politics.
“When I will join politics, I will come out in the open,” she said. Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Raj Babbar had on Saturday night tweeted a photograph of Choudhary along with Priyanka Gandhi, saying “welcome to the Congress family”. Sapna Chaudhary was a contestant on the popular reality show “Bigg Boss”. She was also a part of a song in the movie “Veere Di Wedding”. In 2016, a police case was filed against the performer for making casteist remarks in a song.
