New Delhi : The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday petitioned President Pranab Mukherjee to seek an independent report from the West Bengal Governor on the violence in Malda district and burning of the Kaliachak police station.
A delegation led by its general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya alleged communal overtones and urged the President to order a probe into the role of ruling Trinamul Congress MPs Idris Ali and Imran Ahmed and Janata Dal(U)’s Gulam Rasool in the violence.
In a memorandum the BJP dismissed CM Mamata Banerjee’s claim of a clash between the locals and BSF, asking why the police station was attacked and not the BSF barracks.
It pointed out that the TMC Government stopped the BJP delegation seeking to visit the area for investigation twice, and allowed Edara-e-Sharia, a fundamentalist religious organisation, to organise a gatherign of over two lakh on the communal lines.
The party alleged inaction on part of the state government on the Malda violence and claimed that the TMC government’s policy of ”appeasement and vote bank” politics posed a threat.Linking the violence with the fake currency racket and opium cultivation, Vijayvargiya told reporters after meeting the President that the Kaliachak police station was attacked by the anti-social elements only to burn down the dossiers of key criminals kept there.
