New Delhi: The on Wednesday organised a silent protest rally at Jantar Mantar here against what it claimed as a ‘cowardly’ attack on its president Amit Shah’s roadshow in Kolkata on Tuesday.
The protest was led by senior party leaders including Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman who said it was to highlight alleged ‘goondaism’ of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her Trinamul Congress Party in not allowing even a peaceful roadshow by the rival parties.
A scuffle had broken out in Kolkata between the BJP and Trinamul supporters outside the Calcutta University in north Kolkata during Shah”s roadshow. After the scuffle, the bust of social reformer Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar was vandalised, leading to the BJP and Trinamul Congress blaming each other. Shah insisted at a press conference in Kolkata that it was a Trinamul conspiracy to vandalise Vidyasagar’s bust ‘to win the lost election battle.’
