Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national vice president Mukul Roy and his son Subhranshu Roy have joined the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in the presence of West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee in Kolkata.

"I have joined TMC today. In the present circumstances, no one will stay in the BJP," said Roy. He also said that he never had any differences with the TMC supremo.

Mamata Banerjee welcomed him back to the TMC fold and said that he will play an important role in the party. She said that BJP had forcibly kept Roy with them due to which his mental health was being affected. The Chief Minister added that Roy did not speak against her during the campaigning for the Assembly polls earlier this year.

She also said that such gentle and sober leaders, who went to the BJP, can be welcomed back in the TMC. "Those who criticized the party, betrayed the party before elections for BJP, for money, we will not consider them," she further said.

Roy contested the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections from Krishnangar Uttar constituency and defeated TMC candidate actor Koushani Mukherjee.

Roy's meeting with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee comes a month after the TMC secured a landslide victory in the West Bengal assembly elections.

Mukul Roy, a founding member of TMC, had changed camps and joined BJP in November 2017.
