New Delhi: Sonia Gandhi has hit out at the BJP for all kinds of frauds perpetuated to mislead the voters and win the elections.
"The voters’ verdict should be respected in any condition, but you and the nation know how much was moral and how much not," she said while addressing a public meeting in Rai Bareli on Wednesday to thank voters for re-electing her to the Lok Sabha.
In the speech text released by the AICC HQ here, she said most unfortunate for the country was that the ruling party forgot all decencies to remain in power.
Sonia also did not desist from pointing out all sorts of doubts about the poll process in the last few years. "Many say these doubts are genuine. Many also say there are no evidences. But there cannot be smoke without fire and so the doubts must be resolved," she said.
Pointing out how all leaders and citizens fought for independence without knowing if they will achieve the result, she said they all engaged in the nation building after 1947.
"Mahatma Gandhi got the bullets. Indira Gandhi and Rajiv sacrificed their lives. It is because of them and the people of India that we have brought democracy to this stage.
"It is very easy for some to laugh out their sacrifices. I can nonly tell them that our nation has reached this stage braving many hurdles with struggle, great labour and far-sightedness and we should not do anything that hurts the basic principles of democracy."
Sonia said all know how the BJP government brought "achchhe din" in the past five years and how it fulfilled its promises, but she still wishes them the best for winning the election with more strength.
She committed on behalf of the Congress to stand by the government in every step to strengthen the democracy, support every scheme for making life of common man, poor and deprived better, "but we shall certainly oppose tooth and nail on any steps to weaken the Constitution and democracy or action against the weak and deprived."
