BJP damaging cultural identity of states: Congress

New Delhi: The Congress on Wednesday condemned the vandalisation of the bust of great Bengal reformer Ishwar Chand Vidyasagar in Kolkata by a BJP mob during a roadshow of its president Amit Shah in Kolkata, saying the party led by Prime Minister Modi and Shah is squarely responsible for systematically damaging the cultural identity of each state.

Its spokesman Abhishek Manu Singhvi said: “A new politics where ‘mobocracy’ is being actively encouraged and abetted by the ruling BJP in the country has gained ground in the past five years.

Respect for regional aspirations, culture, language, food habits and Identity of indigenous people are under attack by the BJP in every state of the country. This negative politics of ‘destruction, demolition and discretion’ are methodically vitiating the political atmosphere of the country. BJP wants to exert its monolithic supremacy and bigoted agenda on each state, thus weakening the federal polity.”

Singhvi underlined that Congress President Rahul Gandhi has taken upon himself to protect the culture, identity, language of the various states which make India, a reason why he is fighting from both North India (Amethi) and from South India (Wayanad) to let all parts of India feel united under the common umbrella of the Congress party.

He said disrespect for national icons and hegemony of their own ideology is reflective of the BJP’s mindset pointing out how Shah’s team member H Raja had threatened to destroy the statue of Tamil Nadu’s great social reformer Periyar and BJP general secretary Ram Madhav actively justified pulling down statues, but no action was taken against him.
