Kolkata : A woman’s hair was chopped off allegedly as punishment for adultery at the behest of a kangaroo court in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district, the state police said on Thursday. Two people have been arrested in connection with the incident.
According to locals, the 32-year-old woman, a resident of the Chandpur village of Nowda area, was accused of having an extra-marital affair. The village kangaroo court slapped her with a fine of Rs 6,000. “The members of the court allegedly beat up the woman and forced her husband to cut off her hair as punishment, we have arrested two people named Imadul Sheikh and Liton Sheikh based on the FIR lodged by the victim and her husband. The search for the third accused is on,” a district police official said.
The woman had allegedly eloped with a man she met recently. Both were brought back and the village headman set up a kangaroo court that charged the woman with adultery.
